The time has come, to come out of the closet with what I’ve been working on the last year. Around the time, I had finished the construction of my #canvasproject , I stumbled upon a different approach of unusual spatialisation of sound. The austrian company sonible has constructed a 20-channel icosahedrical speaker and developed accompanying software for creating three dimensional virtual sound sources (iko.sonible.com, see picture below). It’s rather difficult to explain how this excactly works, but I really liked the idea. Apart from looking really badass, my mind started to race around the idea, how this system could be used artistically, apart from the the 3D-approach.
Long story short: I really wanted, nay, NEEDED one for myself. Since I already had 16 speakers and amplifiers from the canvas, I thought it couldn’t be too difficult to build an icosahedrical speaker on my own.Absatz
I was quite wrong! But I took it pretty far the last year and am about to finish the construction of the speaker system. I have hesitated a while to post anything about it, ‚cause I felt I needed to finish everything first, to present the whole project. But since it might take a while to finish everything to the last painted surface and I’m actually too excited to not share it, I will write a little blog about it, describing all different stages and plans.
